Why in news?

Tamil Nadu is one of the states with low performance of candidates in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

What are the reasons for students’ low performance?

  • NEET was introduced last year all over India and students of Tamil Nadu had to face the examination without any prior coaching.
  • This sudden decision by the union government disrupted the functioning of medical counselling and admission processes.
  • After the agitations, students have accepted the inevitability of appearing for NEET for getting medical admissions.
  • But the coaching centres and training centres in Tamil Nadu have not caught with the rest of the country in giving preparing students to face the NEET exam.
  • Also as the coaching industry is huge, students from disadvantaged backgrounds are unable to pay for the coaching separately.
  • Even with students who have cleared the NEET, there are many from the low percentile who will not be allotted government colleges and they can’t afford to pay fees in private institutions.

What can be done to increase performance in NEET?

  • The state government has to take initiative to upgrade the syllabus thereby making it easier for students to approach the NEET syllabus.
  • Free coaching centres can be set up in rural areas, where students from government and government aided schools can get training for appearing various examinations.
  • Coaching centres in cities have to be regulated and in case of exorbitant prices, ceilings can be set up.
  • The students have to accept the reality and start preparing to clear the examinations.
