About the Ministry

  • The functional spectrum of this Ministry is wide, ranging from generating cultural awareness at grassroots level to promoting cultural exchanges at international level.
  • To develop and sustain ways and means through which the creative and aesthetic sensibilities of the people remain active and dynamic is one of the objective of the ministry.
  • The mandate of the Ministry of Culture revolves around the functions like preservation and conservation of our cultural heritage and promotion of all forms of art and culture, both tangible and intangible.

Schemes and initiatives of the Ministry 

46th Session of the World Heritage Committee

  • It was held at New Delhi which was hosted by Archaeological Survey of India, Ministry of Culture.
  •  Project PARI (Public Art of India) – Was initiated during this session, in which the participants in creating wall paintings, Murals and Sculptures.

Moidams

  • Moidams, the Mound-Burial System of the Ahom Dynasty was inscribed on the World Heritage List as a cultural property in July, 2024.
  • It is situated in Assam which contains the necropolis of the medieval royal family of the Ahoms.
  • With this, India now has 43 properties on the World Heritage List, besides 56 properties on UNESCO’s Tentative List.

Cultural Property Agreement

  • The agreement was signed between India and the USA to prevent and curb the illicit trafficking of antiquities from India to the USA.
  • A total 358 retrieved Antiquities have been repatriated as on date.

Classical languages

  • The Government recognized Assamese, Marathi, Pali, Prakrit and Bengali as classical languages.

  • At present the total number of the Classical languages is 11 including Tamil (2004), Sanskrit (2005), Telugu (2008), Kannada (2008), Malayalam (2013), and Oriya (2014).

First Asian Buddhist Summit

  • The Summit was organised by the MoC and the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC).
  • Theme – Role of Buddha Dhamma in strengthening Asia.
  • It saw participation from 32 countries with over 160 international participants.
  • The Ministry of Culture in association with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC) observed the International Abhidhamma Divas.

Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP)

  • 3 literary works including Ramcharitmanas, Panchatantra and Sahrdayāloka-Locana was inscribed in the 2024 MOWCAP Regional Register.

Yuga Yugeen Bharat Rashtriya Sangrahalaya

  • It is the world’s largest museum that is being developed at the North and South Block Secretariat Buildings on Raisina Hill, New Delhi.
  • India is collaborating with the France Museums Development, the designated operator for the government of the French Republic, to develop the new museum.

India’s first Archaeological Experiential Museum – It is being developed at Vadnagar, Gujarat.

International Museum Expo

  • The 2nd Edition of International Museum Expo was organised by National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) in collaboration with Ministry of Culture.

Humayun’s Tomb World Heritage Site Museum

  • It was inaugurated on 29th July 2024, which promises to be a significant addition to the existing tourist attractions in Delhi.

Bhartiya Kala Mahotsav

  • It was organised by North East Zone Cultural Centre (NEZCC) an Autonomous organization of the Ministry of Culture.
  • It includes Cultural performance and Cuisines showcasing North-East Region of India in which 250 artists participated in the event.
