KEY POINTS
· At the table of the United Nations Security Council, where our two countries are currently seated side by side. France and India will be at the forefront of UN endeavours as they chair the Security Council.
· France favours the expansion of the council in both categories of membership, permanent and non-permanent.
· Both countries support the candidatures of India and the three other G4 members (Germany, Japan, Brazil) for permanent seats.
· Thus, an expanded council could have up to 25 members. It would make the Security Council more representative of today’s world and strengthen its authority.
· France proposed a collective and voluntary agreement among the current permanent members of the Security Council to the effect that they would refrain from using the veto in case of mass atrocities, on a large scale.
· In addition to working for the reform of the UN, France and India are proactive on key issues on the Security Council agenda.
· Issues include the active protection of civilians in conflict areas, for instance in Africa or West Asia, the rigorous implementation of arms emphasize on strengthening of the humanitarian space as well as the modernisation of peacekeeping missions.
