KEY POINTS

Being a neighbouring country, India hast to play a safe role in the military coup of Myanmar.

Intervention needed

·        India being the largest democratic country, in order to bring peace for neighbouring country democracy has to be established.

·        India needs to solve the border problem along with the problem of Rohingya crisis.

·        Kaladan multi modal project is still not completed, transportation is essential for better economic integration.

Cautious approach

·        India has a complex relationship with the civilian government and military in Myanmar.

·        While backing democratic forces in Myanmar, India has retained close contacts with the military because of security concerns related to its northeastern states.

·        India also believes its contacts with Myanmar’s military help balance China’s influence within the neighbouring country.

·        So the Indian side has not publicly criticised Myanmar’s handling of the Rohingya crisis.

·        The military seizing power was due to fault lines related to politics, ideology and personality, and India’s response will be guided by past lessons.
