KEY POINTS

Haider Ali

·        Haider Ali’s growing power and his friendly relations with the French became a matter of concern for the English East India Company.

·        Establishment of ordnance factory at Dindigul 1755.

·        Formation of first naval fleet in 1763 alarmed the British.

·        Haider Ali defeated English and captured Mangalore. In March 1769, he attacked Madras and forced the English to sign a treaty on 4 April 1769. Treaty of Madras (1769).

Tipu Sultan

·        Established strong connection with French, member of Jacobin club.

·        Planted tree of Liberty at Srirangapatnam.

·        Sent Ambassadors to France and Turkey to seek foreign alliance to fight against British.

·        State flourished economically under Tipu Sultan, monopoly of trade and commerce especially in sandalwood and spices.

·        Established a strong army on European lines, got assistance from French to build the army.

·        Religiously tolerant, gave support to build Sharda temple at Sringeri.
