KEY POINTS

Space Junks

Space junk, or space debris, is any piece of machinery or debris left by humans in space. It can refer to big objects such as dead satellites that have been left in orbit at the end of their mission.

Consequences

·        Impacts by debris larger than 10 cm can cause catastrophic break-ups, which cause the Kessler syndrome.

·        Collisions with debris larger than 1 cm would disable an operational spacecraft, and can cause the explosion of a decommissioned spacecraft or rocket body.

·        Impacts by millimetre-size debris may cause local damage or disable a subsystem of an operational spacecraft.

·        Large space-debris objects that re-enter  the atmosphere in an uncontrolled way can reach the ground and create risk to the population on ground.

·        The related risk for an individual is, several orders of magnitude smaller than commonly accepted risks, such as driving a car.

·        Larger debris, however, can occasionally impact with Earth and have detrimental effects on the environment.

·        Debris from Russian Proton rockets contain unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH), a carcinogen which is harmful to plants and animals.
