KEY POINTS

Anganwadi Services Scheme is a centrally sponsored scheme implemented by the States / UTs as per the guidelines/instructions issued by Government of India.

Status of Anganwadi centres (AWC)

·        According to government data, the country has 13.77 lakh AWCs.

·        ICDS beneficiaries do register for services but because the anganwadis lack adequate facilities, they turn to paid options.

·        AWCs clearly do not provide the environment that encourages parents to leave children at these centres.

·        Only a limited number of AWCs have good facilities like creche, and recreational and learning facilities for pre-school education.

Measures taken

·        To strengthen the monitoring of Anganwadi Services Scheme ICDS-Rapid Reporting System (RRS) has also been introduced for capturing the data of AWCs online.

·        Under POSHAN Abhiyaan Smart Phones are provided to Supervisors and Anganwadi workers to provide online data.

·        The Government of India has recently enhanced the honorarium of Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) at main-Anganwadi Centres (AWCs)

Need of the hour

·        Creation of infrastructure to upscale the standards of all its services.

·        States have much to learn from each other’s experiences.

·        Anganwadi centres must cater to the needs of the community and the programme’s workers.
