For mountains already grappling with issues of climate change, it spells disaster and the scars of plastic pollution are already visible.
A sensitive ecosystem
· Mountains are the most sensitive to all climatic changes because mountains create gradients of temperature, precipitation and insolation.
· A given mountain slope may include several climatic systems such as tropical, subtropical, temperate and alpine each of which represents a microcosm of a larger habitat diversity.
Plastics pollute
· The Himalayan Cleanup (THC), an annual event organised by Integrated Mountain Initiative and Zero Waste Himalaya has revealed that plastics in the mountains has become all pervasive.
· In 2020, the Nepali government set out plans to clear 35,000 kg of rubbish from Everest and five other peaks in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.
· A large part of plastics flooding the mountains are also mostly of packaged food items that are non-recyclable in nature.
For better environment
· Extended Producer Responsibility needs to respond to the plastic crisis by closing the tap on plastic pollution at source.
· Local authorities and communities on whom the sole responsibility for waste has rested so far also get additional support.
· Bringing about a behaviour change both among locals and tourists is central to addressing the menace of plastic waste.
· Upskilling and enabling waste professionals to work in the difficult terrain of the mountains through safety and health modules.
