KEY POINTS
National Family Health Survey (NFHS) (2015-2019) show that the proportion of stunted children has risen in 17 states and 5 Union territories.
The share of underweight and wasted children has also gone up in the majority of the states.
Measures to overcome malnutrition
· Anaemia Mukt Bharat, Iron and Folic Acid (IFA) supplementation, de-worming, promotion of iodized salt, Vitamin-A supplementation. Mission Indradhanush to ensure high coverage of vaccination in children.
· Stricter implementation of Home Based Newborn Care (HBNC) and Home Based Young Child care (HBYC) programmes and Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram.
· Timely service delivery and a robust monitoring as well as intervention infrastructure for schems like POSHAN Abhiyaan.
· Ensuring convergence with various other programmes. Information Technology enabled Common Application Software for strengthening service delivery and interventions.
· Mid-day meal to children as per the nutritional standards provide in the Schedule-II of the National Food Security Act, 2013.
· States/UTs to be advised by Central government to provide Food Security Allowance (FSA) comprising of food grains, pulses, oil, etc., (equivalent to cooking cost) to all eligible children.
