KEY POINTS
After electricity, the largest use of fossil fuels is in the transport sector. So it is necessary for India to decarbonise the transportation sector to attain the goals of Intended Nationally determined contributions.
Ways to decarbonize
· Railways need to move towards full electrification via renewable energy and biodiesel.
· However, in road transport, the use of petrol and diesel is expected to rise. Electric vehicles (EVs) are far cheaper to run now. Effective implementation of Faster adoption of Manufacturing of electric vehicle is required.
· The government should provide full financing as debt through the Power Finance Corporation to the companies investing in Discoms.
· Charging infrastructure along with battery manufacturing eco-system through collaboration of Government and private players are needed.
· The best way would be for the government to give a policy directive to the electricity distribution companies to create the critical charging infrastructure in metros and large cities.
· Introduction of hybrid trucks and buses which run on electricity for inter-city movement.
