KEY POINTS

·        The Wildlife Forensic and Conservation Genetics (WFCG) Cell main functions include undertaking research for the enhancement of the wildlife forensics protocols.

·        Identification of species from a variety of wildlife parts and products for the enforcement support, developing and maintaining a repository of wildlife reference samples.

·        Indian researchers have been able to identify around 400 unique rhinos. The researchers could use this data to compare with rhino horn samples to trace the rhino back to its breeding population.

·        This technique also helps identify trade routes and point to poaching hotspots. The project is part of the Rhino DNA Indexing System (RhODIS- India) conservation programme.

·        Indian scientists are building a reference DNA database for red panda populations in the country that will help in conservation and combating illegal wildlife trade.

·        Moreover, scientists at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) in Bareilly are in the process of collecting DNA samples of all wild animals to set up the bank. It is expected to help in research and also in bringing down poaching.

·        Wildlife agencies elsewhere have been using modelling techniques to determine routes that poachers can take and predict when a crime is about to happen.

·        DNA tracing can add to these technologies and convictions using scientific evidence can help with conservation efforts.
